Here at Commonwealth Signs, we get excited every time someone mentions famous signage of any kind. Some signs can be so iconic that they serve as landmarks for tourists visiting the area. Understanding the significance of a good sign, we use the utmost care and attention designing signs for our clients in the Louisville area. Here are a few of the most famous signs in the country:
In our last blog, we discussed the interesting history behind the famed Hollywood sign. Not only does it symbolize the hopes and dreams of aspiring actors, it’s also believed to be haunted by the ghost of Peg Entwistle. A successful New York City stage actress, Entwistle moved to Hollywood in 1932 to pursue a film career, but she experienced personal difficulties and jumped to her death from the letter “H” of the famed sign, cutting her promising life tragically short.
Although it’s considered one of the most famous signs of all time, it fell into disrepair several times and could have ceased to exist. During the Great Depression, it deteriorated so badly that the “H” sign fell over. In the late 1970s, the sign was in such bad condition that Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner held an auction to raise funds for its restoration. When developers wanted to build mansions around the emblem, Hefner raised enough funds to buy the land from the developers.
Idaho Potato Museum Sign
Although Idaho is home to beautiful mountain scenery, it’s best known for its potatoes. If you ever find yourself in Blackfoot, check out the Idaho Potato Museum. Upon your arrival, you’ll immediately feast your eyes on its sign, which features, you guessed it, a giant baked potato. At this museum, you’ll learn more about potatoes than you ever knew was humanly possible.
Wrigley Field Sign
Perhaps one of the most famous sports stadiums of all time, Chicago’s Wrigley Field serves as the home of the Chicago Cubs. Built in 1914, the stadium features an ivy-covered wall as well as an iconic entrance sign. The bold white letters perfectly contrast the bright red sign. When the Cubs won the World Series in 2016, crowds of locals gathered around the sign to celebrate their team’s first World Series victory in over a hundred years.
Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas
Renowned for its over-the-top stage shows, casinos, and all-around debauchery, Las Vegas attracts tourists from all over the world on a daily basis. If you happen to enter the city driving down Las Vegas Boulevard, you can’t miss the colorful retro sign that reads “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas.” Designed by Betty Willis in 1959, this emblem perfectly captures the uniqueness and decadence of the glitzy desert town.
White Stag Sign
One of the most iconic signs you can find is the White Stag emblem in Portland, Oregon. Designed by the White Stag Sportswear company, this neon sign features a stag leaping over the state of Oregon. This time of year, the stag is topped with a glowing red nose in honor of the holiday season.
